Convening a Public Health Services Research Leadership Forum
A continuing concern of many in the public health community is that there is no professional group of peers dedicated to the issue of public health practice research. Based on this need, The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice (COL) facilitated the development of a Public Health Systems Research Affiliate at the 2002 Annual Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy (AHSRHP) research meeting in Washington D.C. This affiliate will provide a “home” for public health services researchers to come together, share methods, findings and questions. The development of the research affiliate at AHSRHP’s annual research meeting came in direct response to recommendations set forth in the first National Public Health Services Research Leadership Forum at the 129th Annual American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting in Atlanta, GA. Participants in the first Leadership Forum also confirmed the need to develop a national research agenda and prioritize research needs guided by Healthy People 2010 objectives and the 10 Essential Public Health Services, pilot 3-4 “Centers of Excellence,” establish a fellowship program to help "grow" the pool of researchers in this field and reconvene the Leadership Forum. The purpose of reconvening the Public Health Services Research Forum is to bring public health leaders together to build political support and develop strategies to ensure adequate funding is available for advancing the recommendations set forth in the first National Public Health Services Research Forum.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the current state of public health services research. 2. Discuss developments in the field of public health services research. 3. Gain insight into perspectives and initiatives of organizations supporting public health services research. 4. Develop recommendations and strategies for advancing the field of public health services research.
