Past President Session I: Indigenous Perspectives on Health: Modern Problems and Ancient Solutions
The session will include a panel of Indigenous Leaders in the areas of Public Health, Medicine, and Health Care Delivery who will discuss critical health issues that confront Indigenous communities today. Health problems that are prevalent in Indigenous communities will be discussed from cultural, contextual, and historical perspectives. Barriers to care will be identified along with the practices that contribute to disparities in health care and health outcomes. Finally, panel members will discuss how the integration of traditional healing philosophies and practices can result in more culturally responsive health practices and service delivery, as well as in an increase in service utilization among Indigenous peoples.
Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be presented with information regarding the current health status of American Indians/Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Aboriginal Canadians, Maoris of New Zealand and the Australian Aboriginal populations. Participants will be able to identify the major health problems that confront Indigenous communities today. 2. Participants will be able to identify several historical events that have contributed to the dispossession of Indigenous peoples and to the health disparities experienced by this group. 3. Participants will be able to identify current service delivery factors that contribute to health disparities for Native peoples. 4. Participants will be able to discuss ancient solutions from an Indigenous health perspective that can be applied to current health problems in order to promote a more culturally relevant health perspective.
