Building Healthy Aging Communities
The purpose of this special session is to increase awareness among APHA membership about initiatives underway in the public and private sectors to improve and sustain the health of the middle aged and older population at the local community level. Underlying these initiatives is the important recognition that population aging brings public health challenges that can be addressed through concerted and coordinated efforts by federal, state, and local public agencies, as well as by organizations in the private sector. This special session is an outgrowth of the APHA’s commitment to addressing the public health challenges of an aging population, and was organized with substantial input from members of the APHA Task Force on Aging. Dr. Julie Gerberding (invited), the new Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will discuss current initiatives at the CDC and state/local health departments to promote healthy lifestyles in the older population. Edwin Walker, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and Programs at the U.S. Administration on Aging (AoA), will discuss current initiatives at the AoA to promote healthy aging communities. Robin Mockenhaupt, Senior Program Officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will discuss the Foundation's Initiative: Active for Life: Increasing Physical Activity Levels in Adults Age 50 and Older. Nancy Whitelaw, Director of Health and Aging Services Research at the National Council on the Aging (NCOA), will discuss current NCOA initiatives to help mobilize communities to implement health promotion and disease reduction programs for middle aged and older adults using evidence-based information to frame these programs.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: Discuss current initiatives underway at the Centers for Disease Control and public health departments to encourage healthy lifestyles in the older population. Discuss current initiatives underway at the U.S. Administration on Aging to encourage healthy lifestyles in the older population, and to promote family caregiving to older adults with disabilities. Explain the purpose of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's community-based initiative: Active for Life: Increasing Physical Activity Levels in Adults Age 50 and Older.
