This symposium features a set of papers focused on how community-based participatory research has been used in the development and implementation of a family-centered intervention designed to prevent or reduce substance use, early sexual initiation, and violent behavior among preadolescent African American males. Each paper draws on experiences with the Fathers and Sons Project to illustrate how collaboration between community-based organizations in Flint, Michigan, the Genesee County Health Department, and the University of Michigan's School of Public Health has resulted in the development of a culturally and locally relevant intervention involving non-resident African American fathers and their 8-12 year old sons.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will: 1) Recognize the importance of the community-based participatory research approach for preventive interventions with African American families. 2) Be able to link theory to practice in working with African American fathers and sons. 3) Appreciate the challenges involved in evaluating community-based interventions.
