The session will present findings from the 2001 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS 2001) and demonstrate how researchers can use state-level surveys like CHIS. The CHIS 2001 sample includes more than 57,000 households in California surveyed through an RDD and list-based telephone survey. CHIS includes a very large and diverse sample for Latinos, a very large sample of Asian American/Pacific Islanders including Asian groups, and an unprecedented sample of American Indians/Alaska Natives; it also includes a large sample for African Americans. The session will present results from four studies using CHIS data: (1) a study of uninsurance, health insurance coverage, and eligibility for public coverage programs by race/ethnicity and socio-economic status; (2) a paper that explains how CHIS developed its detailed modeling of eligibility for Medicaid and SCHIP and presents estimates by race/ethnicity; (3) a paper that explains how CHIS was designed to represent California’s ethnic and racial diversity adapted the questionnaires both culturally and linguistically; and (4) a paper that presents alternative methods of classifying respondents into racial and ethnic categories and the effects of each classification method on estimates for health indicators. | |||
