Session: Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Prevention in LGBT Communities
3184.0: Monday, November 11, 2002: 12:30 PM-2:00 PM
Oral
Alcohol and Tobacco Use and Prevention in LGBT Communities
Alcohol and tobacco use rates among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender populations has been shown to be higher than that of the general population. Furthermore, advertising and economic support to the LGBT communities from the alcohol and tobacco industry has dramatically increased, exacerbating consumption and use patterns while impacting recovery, cessation, and prevention efforts of community-based programs and public health organizations. This session will examine alcohol and tobacco use patterns among select LGBT populations, and will provide examples of community-based cessation programs and methods to limit the impact and reach of the alcohol and tobacco industry efforts within LGBT communities.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1)Describe alcohol and tobacco use rates and characteristics among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals; 2)Articulate community-based prevention strategies for use in smoking and alcohol cessation programs; 3)Identify areas requiring further research into the consumption and prevention of alcohol and tobacco products in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.
