Lesbian and Bisexual woman face unique challenges in their access to healthcare and may experience increased rates of specific diseases and other health conditions. Lesbian orientations have been associated with cigarette smoking and alcohol use putting them at risk for malignancies, coronary artery disease, hypertension, and chronic pulmonary conditions. Studies have also found lesbian women less likely to have had a Pap smear or clinical breast exam than heterosexual women. Increasingly, research has focused on lesbian populations’ access to and utilization of health care, with many respondents reporting negative health care experiences as a result of providers’ responses to their sexual orientation. This session will examine the experience of lesbian and bisexual women in accessing culturally and ethnically appropriate healthcare in a variety of settings.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1)Describe barriers encountered by lesbian and bisexual women in accessing appropriate health screenings; 2)Articulate the influence of ethnicity and gender presentation on accessing appropriate health care 3)Identify community and provider level strategies to overcome barriers of lesbian and bisexual women in accessing healthcare.
