Elders represent the fastest growing population in the United States, many of whom identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. This large, growing population of LGBT people share similar health characteristics and needs with the general aging population, while also demonstrating specific experiences and needs related to their sexual and gender minority status. Middle-aged and senior LGBT individuals may not be out to their families or children, limiting access to traditional family-based support systems. Furthermore, elder LGBT individuals can face societal and legal obstacles in the recognition of significant others, negatively impacting access to individuals in acute and long-term care situations, while limiting the legal authority of partners. This session will examine the health-related experiences and healthcare needs of middle-aged and elder LGBT individuals.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1)Describe the health care and social service needs and characteristics of middle-aged and elderly LGBT individuals; 2)Identify societal, professional, and legal barriers to the access of health care by middle-aged and elder LGBT individuals and their support systems; and 3)Articulate strategies for improving access and appropriateness of health care and social services to middle-aged and elderly LGBT populations.
