The health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth is uniquely impacted by the interaction of their youth status and their identification and presentation as sexual and gender minorities. Studies of LGBT youth have shown increased incidence of depression and suicide, and a greater likelihood to experience harassment or violence at school. LGBT youth may also be at greater risk for sexual and non-sexual risk behaviors. This session will examine definitions and characteristics of LGBT youth, their experiences as compared to their heterosexual counterparts, and potential strategies to promote and maintain mental and physical health.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1)Identify the significance of early development of minority sexual and gender orientation to the health of lgbt youth 2)Describe the health and safety risks of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth; 3)Discuss successful health and well-being prevention strategies relevant to lgbt youth.
