There is wide awareness of telemedince applications in clinical medicine but less appreciation of the opportunities these new technologies present for public health. Of special interest are applications for developing countries and collaboration among and between countries in the development and use of telemedicine. This session will examine a variety of such uses: For university-based research in Colombia For the monitoring of emerging infectious diseases via the U.S. military For public health education and practice in Cuba The requirements and opportunities presented by these applications will be described. Issues of confidentiality and coordination will be examined. Further developmental options for these information systems will be discussed. | |||
Learning Objectives: To become familiar with a range of applications of telemedicine in public health; To examine examples of applications from several organizations in various countries To develop a wider appreciation for potential applications of telemedicine in the promotion of public health. To identify opportunities for international collaboration in telemedicine for mutual benefit. | |||
