Community-Based Public Health Caucus

Submit Abstract

The Community-Based Public Health Caucus invites abstracts and full Session Proposals related to the science and practice of community-based public health.

The Community-Based Public Health Caucus is guided by the belief that community lies at the heart of public health, and that research protocols and interventions work best when they are rooted in the values, knowledge, expertise, and interests of the community itself.

We believe that health encompasses the physical, mental, spiritual, social, environmental, and economic well-being of a community and its members. We recognize the power of equal partnerships including community-based organizations, academic institutions, and health agencies to address the health issues of a community. We understand that in order for these partnerships to be equal, and for interventions to be community-based, community members must participate fully in the identification of health issues and the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of programs that address these issues. Research protocols similarly must incorporate community members in the identification of the research questions, in the development of the research design, and in the data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings.

We invite abstracts that reflect a diversity of community-based public health activities, including both basic and applied research projects, interventions, and teaching and service learning projects. Of particular interest are abstracts that provide participants with enhanced knowledge and skills with regard to the process of conducting community-based public health activities. All abstracts should be submitted to one of the seven general topic areas listed below.

Please remember: abstracts also should reflect the 2003 APHA Meeting theme: "Behavior, Lifestyle and Social Determinants of Health."
  • Community-Based Epidemiology
  • Evaluating Community-Based Public Health
  • Funding
  • Participatory Assessment
  • Sustainability
  • The WK Kellogg Community Health Scholars Program: Community-Based Research (Restricted to Scholars)
  • Translating Research into Policy to Improve Health
All abstracts will be submitted to peer-review, and ranked for quality and the extent to which the abstract is consistent with the Vision of the Community-Based Public Health Caucus and the 2003 APHA Meeting theme. All abstracts will be considered for oral, roundtable, or poster presentation. Please feel free to contact the planners should you have questions regarding your submission.

We also invite submissions of PROPOSALS FOR FULL SESSIONS (90 minutes in length). In addition to the electronic online submission of an individual abstract for EACH of the 4-5 papers to be included in a Session, a one-page overview of the proposed Session must be submitted directly to the planner via electronic mail at: Scott_Rhodes@UNC.EDU. This one-page overview should include: 1) the Session title, 2) the name of the lead facilitator and the contact person for the Session, 3) a brief overview of the rationale for the Session, and 4) a list (in presentation order) of the individual abstracts to be organized into this Session, complete with titles and time allocated for each presentation and any discussion periods. Also, please indicate whether you would like to have the individual abstracts considered for presentation in other Sessions if your Session Proposal is not accepted. Please note that each individual abstract to be included in a Session must be submitted through the APHA electronic abstract submission process. In the "Comments to Organizers" box for each abstract submission, the authors should indicate that the abstract is to be considered as part of the Proposed Session (indicated by Session title).

The DEADLINE for all abstract and Session Proposal submissions to the CBPH Caucus is February 13, 2003.
