Latino Caucus

Submit Abstract

The scientific program of the APHA Latino caucus explores Latino/Public Health issues related to the theme of the conference: "Behavior, lifestyle and social determinants of health." The program includes the presentation of research, ideas, and experiences of scholars and practitioners with diverse interests and backgrounds. The caucus invites contributions that discuss and highlight the broad set of determinants that influence the health status of Latinos. The program will explore current trends and future areas of research, teaching, and application as well as their impacts on important policy issues. In addition to highlighting the conference themes, the 2003 meeting will include a celebration of the caucus's 30th anniversary and a discussion of the caucus's significant achievements and engagements.

The caucus encourages abstracts from practitioners, new researchers and students.

Abstracts exploring the following topics will receive particular attention:

    Health disparities
    Environmental health concerns for Latinos
    Healthy behaviors of Latinos
    Border health initiatives
The health determinants of immigrant communities
The impact of public policies on health status
Access to care as a determinant of health
    Chronic diseases among Latinos
The health consequences of bi-national communities
We invite all interested in the Latino community to participate in our program development. Submissions are encouraged for posters, roundtables and oral sessions. Workshops, training, tours and other formats may be considered if necessary. Since there are fewer slots for oral presentations than poster presentations, the chances of having an abstract accepted increase if the author is open to more than one presentation format.

Special instructions

If you are planning a session please submit all abstracts individually and inform the program chair. Due to space constrains, we may not be able to fulfill your request for a complete session, so please let us know if you are willing to have the abstracts accepted individually.

The abstracts are peer-reviewed and evaluated using the following criteria.

    Importance/Originality
Quality and description of subject matter
    Clarity and interest of presentation
Quality and completeness of supporting data/philosophy
