Transportation Solutions for Caregivers: A Starting Point

Lisa R. Peters-Beumer, MPH and Kristine A. Cunningham, BA. Easter Seals, Inc., 230 W. Monroe, Suite 1800, Chicago, IL 60606, 312.551.7189, lpeters@easter-seals.org

Transportation is an issue vital to quality of life for both older adults and their caregivers. When physical and cognitive impairments prevent older adults from driving or using public transportation, caregivers often become the primary transportation providers. This transition increases caregiver burden. To reduce transportation-related caregiver burden, this federally-funded project will increase the capacity of the aging service providers and clinicians to offer meaningful solutions for caregivers. Three key areas are addressed including safety, community-based alternatives, and education on existing resources and services. Specifically, a caregiver transportation toolkit has been developed containing information on safety, agitation and other dementia related behaviors, plus wheelchair handling and transfers. Toolkit contents are based on caregiver survey responses. Increased and consistent transportation-related information for caregivers will be available through aging and transportation information and referral programs at the national level. Alternative transportation will be enhanced through support and technical assistance to volunteer organizations. Transportation tools, related materials and programs, and other solutions for caregivers will be presented. Common caregiver transportation issues and concerns will also be discussed.
