Abstract #54837

Public health nursing and community health improvement: Creating a web based community infrastructure database

Kathleen N. Smith, APRN, BC, MPH, Public Health Nursing Administration, Los Angeles County, 241 N. Figueroa St. Room 347, Los Angeles, CA 90012, 213-240-8089, kasmith@dhs.co.la.ca.us

In Los Angeles County, public health nursing has created a web based community infrastructure database. This database was created by district public health nurses who are assigned to a group of census tracts that serve as the geographic basis for practice. Each public health nurse was instructed to survey their census tracts for several categories of community infrastructure such as day care centers, police stations, community clinics, and board and care homes. These findings were compiled in a countywide database that uses a sorting feature to enable examination of the data by zip code, census tract, health district, city and many other parameters. The data is available to the community and to public health nurses via a nursing maintained web site. The public health nurses update the database yearly. It serves as a valuable planning tool for the community and as a guide in formulating public health nursing practice objectives at the census tract level.
