Use of treatment and prevention therapies in postmenopausal women diagnosed with low bone mineral density

Objectives: Determine use of treatment and prevention therapies by patients after receiving results of osteoporosis screening. Methods: Phone based survey to follow up with patients who presented for DEXA scans at a community-wide osteoporosis screening project. Results: We were able to determine bone density status and follow-up information for 219 individuals. There were significant increases in use of calcium supplementation among women with normal bone mineral density. At screening 37.0% of women with normal bone mineralization were using calcium supplementation, while at follow-up 61.6% were using calcium supplementation (p = 0.002). Among women with low bone mineral density, the use of HRT decreased (from 21.1% on HRT at screening to 6.3% on HRT at follow-up, a significant decrease, p = 0.003). This group also saw a significant increase in the use of calcium supplementation. Both groups reported increases in the amount of exercise and their dairy intake; however, the differences in the increases between the groups were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our results indicate that the use of calcium supplementation, not requiring a physician prescription, increases after osteoporosis screening. However, use of other therapies requiring a physician prescription did not increase after screening regardless of the patient's bone mineral density status.
