Extensive resources have been developed for caregivers regarding the safe transportation of children in motor vehicles. However, little information is available regarding the safe transportation of those children who have special health care needs (CSHCN). An estimated 18 million children in the US fall into this category, which includes children with neuromuscular, orthopedic, respiratory, gastrointestinal and behavioral conditions (Maternal Child Health Bureau 2003).
We describe the components and implementation of a model occupant restraint program to assist families of CSHCN. Key issues addressed by our program include the selection, purchase and proper use of child safety seats. The program targets both families of CSHCN and their health care providers.
