The 131st Annual Meeting (November 15-19, 2003) of APHA |
Philip Huang and Travis Hottes. Asian Health Services, 818 Webster St., Oakland, CA 94607
Community-education events targetting gay men are traditionally held in bars or clubs, in an attempt to recontextualize places gay men are already familiar with. Unfortunately, this upholds the myth that bars and clubs--and sex and alcohol by implication--are at the center of the gay community.
In response, Asian Health Services conceived the East Bay Gay Asian Film Festival (featuring local and foreign films by, for or about gay Asians) as an alternative for men tired of the bar scene. Four years later, some 1500 people have attended our annual event, and we have collected hundreds of in-depth behavioral-assessment surveys on gay Asian men and their sex partners as they waited to enter the theater.
We will present findings from these surveys, as well as lay out the process and logistics of putting on a film festival. We will also explain how we used the very data gathered from the attendees to educate them about their own community norms. Finally, we will discuss the role of white men in gay Asian organizing.
