Abstract #57376

PEACH: An interactive and fun way to prioritize health issues in the community

Rachel S. Nuzum, BA and Elizabeth M. Rugg. The Health Councils, Inc., 9800 4th St. North, Suite 206, St. Petersburg, FL 33702, 727-217-7070, rsmokerhc56@citicom.com

Community participation is a crucial component of community health planning. Often times, community input is either difficult to obtain or integrate into an empirical quantitative analyses. By using an interactive strategy called the Popular Empirical Assessment of Community Health (PEACH), qualitative data can be captured in a quantifiable way, allowing for direct integration of data into health assessments and offering an opportunity for community members to develop health policy.

PEACH is a flexible ranking methodology that solicits information from the community on topics ranging from priority health issues; to areas of unmet need; to how scarce resources should be allocated; to the role various agents should play in expanding access to care.

PEACH is based on a 5x5 grid, allowing for the simultaneous analysis and ranking of five subjects on the basis of five variables, which are determined after collecting and analyzing data and key informant responses. The matrix approach used in PEACH enables researchers to discern information based on a series of key questions.

As part of the community planning process in Pasco County, Florida, community members prioritized health issues by using the PEACH model and then developed a strategy to increase access to health care.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:

1. Describe how PEACH can help to quantify qualitative health research. 2. Identify areas of community health research where PEACH can be a valuable tool. 3. Construct a PEACH pocket chart for use in their community health research.
