Type 2 diabetes is an ever-increasing health problem in the United States. With respect to treatment, exercise is often ignored due to patient resistance, yet it remains an important aspect of diabetes care. The objective of this study was to assess exercise in diabetic versus non-diabetic individuals, and characterize a model for diabetic exercise tendencies. Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 1997-2000, non-insulin-requiring diabetics were compared to non-diabetics for exercise status, frequency, and intensity. Contingency table analysis with chi-square revealed that diabetics have significantly lower exercise rates, frequencies, and intensity than non-diabetics. Using logistic regression, diabetics were analyzed for exercise tendencies related to income, race, education, age at diagnosis, duration of diagnosis, Body Mass Index, and gender. When looking at diabetics by exercise status, those with low income and education, advanced age and length of diabetes status were less likely to exercise than those with higher income and education, younger age and shorter duration of diabetes.
