The New York and New Jersey Public Health Training Center has developed and implemented a needs assessment of the public health workforce in New York and New Jersey. The needs assessment, based upon the essential services of public health, was distributed to over 2000 professional public health workers. The survey identified whether the competencies within each essential service was necessary for their position, if they are confident in their ability to perform that competency, and the level of training needed to be able to perform that competency. Results of the needs assessment, and the development of an educational plan for the region will be discussed. Lessons learned from the experiences with implementing surveys with several practice partners will be discussed. Additionally, this presentation will identify the relationships established between the academic (three Schools of Public Health) and practice partners (two state Departments of Health, one large city health department, and many county and local health departments), to enable the Center to achieve its goals.
