Psychosocial issues at work are being recognized as the root causes for outcomes such as increased time away from work, injury and illness. The UIC School of Public Health Illinois Education and Research Center partnered with the National Safety Council and the Canadian Industrial Accident Prevention Association to participate in the International Labor Organization SOLVE course and presented the course to the first North American participants during January, 2003. Participants gained knowledge in the five areas addressed by the SOLVE course: stress, violence, HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drug use and tobacco use along with attention to ecological models and management systems. Furhtermore, participants provided important feedback regarding the objectives and approach for future training sessions. The SOLVE participant course review will be presented to stimulate discussion about the topics and future course directions. The outcome of the session will be to generate input for continued North American SOLVE course implementation.
