Abstract #58237

Healthy People 2010 Objectives: Chiropractic's Role in Meeting the Healthcare Needs of an Increasingly Aged and Diverse Society

Lisa Killinger, DC, Palmer College of Chiropractic, 741 Brady Street, Davenport, IA 52803, 563-884-5150,

The role of chiropractic in general health is, to some, a mystery. However, doctors of chiropractic engage in a surprisingly high level of health promotion and prevention activities in their day to day practices, congruent with the Healthy People 2010 goals and objectives (HP 2010). This presentation will offer a characterization of the current chiropractic health workforce and a summary of practice behaviors from the current health literature. Examples of the ways in which many chiropractors participate in HP 2010 will be cited, along with examples of the ways the HP2010 objectives have begun to shape chiropractic education at some institutions. The rapidly changing demographics of the US population will also be explored, in the context of the chiropractic profession's current and potential role in meeting the healthcare needs of an increasingly aged and ethnically diverse society.
