Daily 13 million children spend a majority of their day in child care facilities. Public health nursing has been asked to outreach to these facilities and provide consultation to providers about safe and healthy practices. Public health nursing also is called on specific health issues of individual children AND of child care staff. Programs such as Healthy Child Care America, funded through the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Health Resources and Services Administration are developing networks of health consultants for child care, many times utilizing public health nurse consultants in their states. This Spring the 2nd edition of Stepping Stones Using Caring for Our Children was released by the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care, funded also by MCHB. This collection of 211 health and safety standards, are considered the most critical in reducing injury and harm of children in child care facilities. This presentation will give an overview of these selected standards and, discuss ways public health nursing consultants can use these standards effectively in their visits to child care facilities.
