Purpose: The purpose of this study was to establish the incidence density of home toddler unintentional injury (TUI) and to explore the relationship between parental supervision and TUI.

Methodology: This descriptive study included 100 parents of children between 12 and 47 months of age. During a home visit, parents completed study questionnaires and we used a standardized injury hazard assessment to validate household exposures. We telephoned each parent weekly for eight weeks to collect information about injuries and injury circumstances.

Results: 98 of the 100 parents completed the eight-week survey. Ninety of the 100 children sustained at least one injury during the follow-up period. There were a total of 282 toddler injuries during 47,694 exposure hours. TUI incidence density was 59 per 10,000 awake hours in the home. Incidence densities for males and females were similar. Five children sustained injuries that required medical attention. Falls were the most common mechanism of injury. Bruises were the most common type of injury. Parents reported valuing close supervision of toddlers and they reported close supervision at the time of injury. Ninety-nine and 81 percent of TUIs happened within hearing or sight of the parent respectively. Parents reported being able to reach the child within five seconds in 92% of TUIs. 59% of TUIs occurred while parents were supervising other children.
