As part of a long term vision to build a statewide network of trainers and advocates for tobacco use prevention and cessation for young people in Indiana, a two year calendar of trainings and support for the Teens Against Tobacco (TATU) Program and TAP/TEG Program in Indiana currently is underway through the Clarian Tobacco Control Center in Indianapolis. This effort, supported with funds from the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency, serves as a model for other states wanting to build and support a dedicated and on-going statewide network of adult facilitators and teen presenters for these two programs. Trainings for TATU are carried out by a core team of trainers who are respiratory therapists at Riley Hospital for Children. Trainings for TAP/TEG are carried out by Community Intervention, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Promotional strategies for trainings rely on strong support from local partners through the existing county network established by Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation to share information about the programs and to be a lead contact with local media. Cross promotion of resources and information available through other statewide partners also is carried out. Follow-up immediately after trainings is carried out to establish a routine for regular contact with training participants through correspondence, telephone, e-mail, and on-site visits. Mentor trainers are available to help address questions or challenges relating to implementation of both the TATU and TAP/TEG programs through e-mail, phone calls, correspondence, or on-site visits.
