Objective: The smoking rate among women of reproductive age has recently increased in Japan. Smoking during pregnancy and after the delivery is very hazardous to babies and children. I conducted a survey on smoking behavior during and after pregnancy focusing on factors related to the smoking restart after the temporal quitting due to the pregnancy. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was sent to every mother who was required to bring her child of one and half year of age to a health checkup at a public health center in Hiroshima City. The questionnaires were collected at the health checkup after the anonymous completion. The survey was conducted from April to May 2002. Results: The number of respondents was 152 and effective response rate was 77.6%. 1. The proportion of current smokers among the mothers was 10.5% and that of ex-smokers and non-smokers was 17.1% and 72.4% respectively. 2. The proportion of those who quit smoking after the confirmation of pregnancy was 14.5% of all respondents and 54.5% of them restarted smoking after the delivery; approximately 40% did before the first birthday of the child. Most frequent reasons of the continuation of smoking were "mental stresses from child care" and "smoking by family members", followed by "finish of nursing." Conclusion: In order to prevent the restart of smoking after the delivery, supports by family and health professionals to mothers would be needed.
