Ethics and Public Health Curriculum Development Project: Use and Dissemination of Teaching Modules

This panel will discuss the Ethics and Public Health Curriculum Development Project (a joint project of the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and The Hastings Center), and through small group discussion with authors of the curriculum, to introduce attendees to implementation and dissemination of the project’s ten curriculum modules. The project developed ten modules to be used in school-based as well as in-service professional education settings to examine a range of ethical issues in public health research, policy and practice. The modules will be available electronically and in hard copy by mid-2003. Curriculum modules topics include: (1) Tradition, profession, and values in public health; (2) the legacy and lessons of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study; (3) research ethics in public health; (4) community-based practice and research; (5) ethics and infectious disease control; (6) public health research and practice in international settings; (7) ethical issues in health promotion and disease prevention; (8) ethical issues in environmental and occupational health; (9) public health genetics; and (10) public health and health system reform.

Session format:

I. Description of the background of the project—J. Kahn (10 mins.) II. Overview and introduction to the modules and its approach to ethics and public health—B. Jennings (10 mins.) III. Discussion of curriculum development in ethics and public health—A. Mastroianni (10 mins.) IV. Group discussion of two individual modules—All (2 x 30 mins. each)
