The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in collaboration with The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPIs) and the Office of Minority Health is creating a portal for health information and resources for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through the expansion of www.healthfinder.gov. healthfinder® is the federal government’s gateway to quality health information provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Web surfers identifying themselves as being Asian or of Pacific Islander descent grew 6% from 2001-2002, to nearly 2.4 million individuals. Recognizing the health disparities suffered by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, healthfinder® needs to be tailored to this populations’ needs and preferences through community involvement. The project involved extensive interviews and usability testings with key intermediaries, community groups, patients, and students. A report summarizing the top 25 tasks that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders want to accomplish on a health information web site as well as other strategies for developing resources for this population will be made available.
