A Prevention News Update dated January 31, 2003 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a ninth grade teacher in Naples, Florida was fired from his job after demonstrating condom use with a banana in his classroom. The firing came after receiving complaints from some parents. Teenage pregnancy, abortion, and childbearing are greater problems in the United States than in many developed countries. Levels of sexual activity in these other countries are not very different than in the United States. This session will include a medically accurate video “Sex: A Guide for the Young” that is used in other countries to provide medically accurate sexuality education for adolescents. The animated video uses diverse adolescents to address topics such as puberty, masturbation, and sexual orientation. A second video will be highlighted (subtitled in English), the result of 4000 young people from ages 11 to 20 who submitted original vignettes about HIV/sexuality education. Thirty vignettes were selected and produced by professional directors. The completed vignettes have been shown on national French television and to adolescents and young adults when providing HIV/ sexuality education.
