AIDSinfo has as its mission to provide access to the latest federally approved information on HIV/AIDS clinical research, treatment and prevention, and medical practice guidelines for consumers and health care providers. It serves as a centralized dissemination point for information about current treatment regimens for HIV infection and AIDS-related illnesses, including the prevention of HIV transmission from occupational exposure and mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy. AIDSinfo works closely with the federal agencies and their committees who create and update the treatment guidelines and maintains them as “living documents” on the web site. These “living documents” reflect the most recent modifications to the guidelines while all the previous versions are maintained in an accessible archive. This service also provides information on HIV/AIDS-related clinical trials – both publicly and privately funded – for all stages of HIV infection. In addition, contextual and supporting information is provided to assist understanding as well as support medical decision-making. AIDSinfo provides this information through both a web site (http://aidsinfo.nih.gov) and a telephone service. While most of the information is in English, much is available in Spanish, including telephone support by Spanish-speaking health information specialists. AIDSinfo was created by the merger of two previous DHHS projects: The AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service (ACTIS) and the HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service (ATIS). The audience for this service includes health care providers, HIV/AIDS patients, their families and friends, researchers.
