For many public health practitioners, the Spectrum of Prevention is a useful tool to re-frame work they are already doing, and highlight gaps in their approach to complex public health issues. The Spectrum is also valuable in coordinating the work of a variety of groups working on the same issue by providing a framework and common language for people from diverse backgrounds to come together, share information, and develop joint plans to achieve public health outcomes. This presentation will help participants to understand how they may already be using many of the elements of the Spectrum of Prevention in their work. It will also describe how a local county public health department in Contra Costa has used the Spectrum of Prevention to work with a range of partners, both within the department and in the community, to design comprehensive approaches to issues such as asthma and childhood obesity. Contra Costa County has added a strategy to the Spectrum of Prevention that we have found to be a useful addition to our work. This strategy, called Mobilizing Neighborhoods and Communities, has helped ensure the effectiveness of our work in underserved communities by empowering and supporting residents to identify and address public health issues that they have identified as key to improving quality of life in their communities.
