Overview of the global tobacco epidemic

The World Health Organization estimates that the population of smokers will increase from 1.1 billion in 1999 to 1.6 billion in 2025. If current trends continue, tobacco use will kill about 500 million people alive in the world today. This figure includes more than 250 million of today’s children and teenagers.
