In recent years many countries have taken steps to protect their citizens from the harms of tobacco. From advertising bans, to smoke-free workplaces, to comprehensive tobacco product regulation, countries are finally realizing that they should not wait for the tobacco-related deaths to increase before taking action. In May 2003 the member countries of the World Health Organization approved the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), adding a powerful weapon in their arsenal to combat the tobacco industry’s efforts to spread death and disease across the developing world.
