Abstract #65374

Progress and challenges in water fluoridation programs

Scott M. Presson, DDS, MPH and David Apanian, PE. Division of Oral Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Hwy, MS F-10, Atlanta, GA 30341, 770-488-6056, skp4@cdc.gov

The evidence supporting water fluoridation has been recently reviewed by several groups. Water fluoridation was recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Fluoride Work Group, and was strongly recommended by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services. A report on state fluoridation status shows progress in a number of states towards the Healthy People 2010 objective of 75%. Information about the status of water fluoridation at the state, county, and water system levels has become more available through state participation in the Water Fluoridation Reporting System. Progress in the implementation of this information system will be presented. Barriers to making further progress in fluoridation coverage will be discussed. Challenges to maintaining or enhancing state infrastructure supporting water fluoridation programs will be reviewed.
