This project is the development of a global health course that will address the needs and interests of graduate and undergraduate students seeking a course that investigates how an international perspective is valuable at the local level. The development of the course is based on a thorough assessment of students’ needs for an international perspective that encourages thinking about health in the United States in a global context. The assessment information was derived from focus groups with Master’s in Public Health (MPH) students, including students that have completed internships outside the United States, MPH alumni, International Relations students, undergraduate and graduate students interested in global health and students born and raised outside the country. Research was conducted on global health courses offered in other institutions, including key informant interviews with institution’s lecturers. Presented will be a proposed course curriculum that suggests that an international perspective be incorporated into the entire MPH curriculum, as well as encompassing a specific course. This session will provide an overview of the development of a global health course with specific examples of critical themes to include in a course and course exercises, as well as a discussion of the challenges of fully implementing this approach.
