Abstract #65881

Antismoking socialization by parents who smoke: Effects on children's initiation of smoking

Christine Jackson, PhD and Denise M Dickinson, MPH. Health Behavior and Health Education, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, CB#7440, Rosenau Hall, School of Public Health, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7440, 919-966-7546, chris_jackson@unc.edu

Objective: Conduct a three-year evaluation of a home-based intervention that engaged parents who smoke in antismoking socialization with their children. Method: At baseline, 887 3rd grade children were randomized to treatment or control; 695 (343 treatment; 352 control) completed a 36-month follow-up assessment of smoking initiation. Results: Effectiveness evaluation compared children randomized to treatment with controls; significantly more controls reported initiation of smoking at follow-up (10.8% v. 20.2%; OR = 2.13; p < .001). Efficacy evaluation compared children exposed to at least 3 of 5 core treatment modules (n = 221) with controls; the odds of initiation were 2.8 times greater among controls (8.1% v. 20.2%; OR = 2.83; p < .000). Conclusion: Antismoking socialization by parents who smoke can lower the odds that children will initiate smoking. Learning objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to (1) define antismoking socialization; (2) identify key components of an intervention to increase antismoking socialization in households of parents who smoke; (3) discuss the efficacy and effectiveness of antismoking socialization as a strategy to prevent initiation of smoking by children whose parents smoke.
