Kimberly Adams-Tufts, ND, WHNP, FAAN, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44122-7904, 216-368-3108, kba2@po.cwru.edu

The purpose of the Discover Nursing program is to increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities in the nursing workforce. The concept of a pyramid is the guiding framework for the program, i.e. the base of the pyramid would not exist without the apex and vice versa. The base of the pyramid consists of a partnership between the Discover Nursing staff, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing undergraduate students and students from two local schools. Enrichment activities and academic support are provided for students in the 7th through 12 grades. Health education programming, tutoring, and a university-based summer enrichment program are the components of this partnership. Minority undergraduate students are responsible for the tutoring and health education programming thus they act as role models for the pre-college students. The next level of the pyramid is the social and academic support and professional socialization that is provided for undergraduate students by minority graduate students and faculty mentors. The overall goal is to improve rates of retention and graduation among underrepresented students. The apex of the pyramid consists of mentorship and role modeling provided by faculty members to students at all levels of the pyramid. This approach has resulted in positive program outcomes. During the past year and one-half, fourteen undergraduate students graduated and all passed RN licensure exam. More than 800 middle school and high schools student participated in school assemblies, small classroom discussions, and/or the mentorship and tutoring program with 23 of those students attending the 2-week summer enrichment program.
