An increasing number of schools of public health and universities are offering distance education programs. The advent of this new mode of learning has changed the teaching paradigm for faculty, who must learn about and employ new pedagogically sound teaching strategies, foster a learning community for students online, and manage courses through course management systems. This presentation describes teaching strategies and tips for successful management of online courses based on theoretically sound principles of adult education, distance education, and instructional technology. The presentation on course management strategies will include attendance of faculty orientation, development of an instructional workplan for the course content and strategies, partnership with a collaborative team of multimedia and instructional design staff to build the course, and constant course monitoring and student feedback. Teaching strategies will address methods for instruction; development and tracking of assignments; facilitation of communications through discussion board, group assignments, and email; and assessment and learning enrichment. Finally, key lessons learned from the implementation of the Rollins School of Public Health Career Master's of Public Health Program and from the field of distance education will be presented.
