With recent advances in technology and the increasing need to achieve a competent public health workforce, health educators today are being drawn out of teaching in the classroom and into different learning environments. Health educators are currently being asked to provide educational courses in learning environments, such as distance learning, in which they themselves are not fully trained to maximize the participants’ learning experience. Partnering with multi-media professionals can provide health educators with the needed skills and expertise to create appropriate learning experiences for the public health professional. At the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, the Office of Applied Public Health has a staff of health educators and multi-media developers that work together to develop instructional materials. Through this close collaboration, many lessons have been learned and strategies have been developed to enhance and promote the partnership between health education and multi-media services. The focus of this presentation will include discussions on the benefits and barriers of health educators working with multi-media professionals. In addition, key multi-media staff positions will be described and how they contribute to the learning experience. Realizing not all health educators have access to multi-media professionals, the presentation will also include multi-media tips health educators can implement on their own. Finally, strategies will be outlined as to how this partnership between health educators and multi-media professionals can be utilized to its fullest capacity.
