The aging of the workforce, "baby boomer" retirement, shortages in key disciplines such as nursing, and shortages in the “pipeline” of younger professionals prepared to take on management and leadership positions is impacting public health leadership and management. In addition to developing current leaders, public health must address the development of the next generation of leaders. Few health departments and other public health organizations are currently addressing succession planning for their leadership yet strong leadership will be essential for the future vitality of these organizations.

The Center for Health Leadership & Practice (CHLP), Public Health Institute, is a leadership training and consultation organization serving domestic and international health leaders and organizations. The presenter will discuss a conceptual framework for “developing the next generation of leaders” that relates succession planning to organizational development, capacity building, leadership development, and workforce planning. The presenter will provide examples from CHLP’s training and consultation in this area.
