Relationship between elderly persons requiring long-term care and their caregivers in Japan

Objectives The objectives of this study are to clarify the background of caregivers in relation to sex, age, self-supporting abilities of the elderly persons requiring long-term care and their caregivers in Japan based on the data of the National Sampling Survey on Household with Persons Requiring Long-Term Care (2000). Methods Of 881,851 Census tracts in Japan, 2500 tracts (0.28%) was sampled in this survey. 4,177 persons were over 64 years of age requiring long-term care or assistance staying in their household. The backgrounds of caregivers such as sex, age, kinship, type of care were observed in relation to sex, age, self-supporting abilities. Results 1) The age distribution of the elderly persons requiring long-term care or assistance were 23% in age 65-74, 40% in age 75-84 and 37% in age 85 and over. The male/female ratio was 0.52. Of those requiring long-term care, 43% were bed ridden. 2) The proportion of the main caregivers was 30% both in spouse and child followed by 28% in spouse of the child. The age distribution of the caregivers was highest in age 50-59 (28%) followed by 60-69 (24%) and 70-79 (18%). Six percents of the caregivers were age 80 and over. The male/female ratio of caregivers was 0.27. 3) The type of care provided by caregivers were meal preparing and cleaning 71%, shopping 70%, talking-companion 69%, house-cleaning 69% and washing 69%. Conclusion Among caregivers, 36% were over 64 years of age at present in Japan. Aging of those giving care is serious problem .
