One in every four deaths in this country is attributed to cancer. In Maine, cancer is the second leading cause of death after heart disease. In an attempt to address this major public health challenge, Maine created a statewide Cancer Consortium. This Consortium worked collaboratively to develop and publish a comprehensive cancer control plan detailing objectives and specific activities to be accomplished over a five year period based on high-priority areas.
The Plan serves as a roadmap for what can and should be done to provide statewide coordination of cancer-related prevention, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation activities. It highlights the roles of the state, the private sector, the non-profit sector, and Maine’s communities and citizens.
This presentation will focus on the evaluation plan designed to track progress and assess the collaborative approach. The presentation will provide detailed information on the overarching evaluative framework, the strategies incorporated, and the step-by-step approach used to create a viable and sustainable evaluation design. Tips for designing and managing a well-integrated plan will be provided. In addition, the challenges and lessons learned during the evaluation process will be discussed. This presentation may be of particular interest to other states and comprehensive cancer control program managers that are looking to evaluate their initiatives.
