Abstract #68624

Web-based training for workplace substance abuse prevention

Although most heavy drinkers and illicit drug users are working adults, workplace health promotion programs rarely include substance abuse prevention materials and messages. Research by our group has previously demonstrated that when substance abuse material is included in popular health promotion programs (e.g., stress management, healthy eating, etc.) employee substance abuse is reduced without hindering the beneficial effects of the health promotion program. In an effort to facilitate the inclusion of substance abuse prevention in workplace health promotion, a multi-media, highly interactive web-based training program called the Prevention Connection has been developed, directed at health promotion practitioners, to help them integrate substance abuse prevention material into their health promotion programs. The Prevention Connection is currently being field-tested in a randomized, posttest-only design involving 300 health promotion practitioners across the country. One-half of the participants will receive the web-based training and the other half will receive print materials on substance abuse. Follow-up questionnaires at two posttest periods will assess participants’ attitudes and knowledge of workplace substance abuse issues, their reactions to the training, and the extent to which they have implemented substance abuse material into their workplace health promotion programs. This presentation will include a brief demonstration of the Prevention Connection program, along with field test results and discussion of implications for web-based training in substance abuse prevention.
