Immigrant workers are more likely than other workers to have a fatal job injury and also have disproportionate rates of non-fatal job injuries and illnesses. In California, the state with the largest immigrant population in the U.S., the Working Immigrant Safety and Health (WISH) Coalition brought together over 50 organizations to propose solutions and improve health and safety conditions for immigrant workers. WISH members emphasized that one of the most effective means of delivering information to immigrant workers is through organizations that they know and trust. Community-based and non-profit service organizations, as well as labor unions, can play a key role in providing health and safety training to employers and workers. This panel will bring together health and safety educators, community-based organizations, and unions that have developed partnerships to address the health and safety needs of their immigrant worker constituencies. Panelists will describe specific projects, tools and strategies, as well as analyze the challenges and factors that contributed to the success of their project. The presentations will include examples of various strategies, such as: influencing policy through the WISH Coalition; integrating worker education with clinical and legal services; developing a worker center model; and training worker trainers and advocates. Workers involved in these projects include those in garment, agriculture, home care, domestic work, and construction.
