Abstract #69040

Providing faculty incentives: Advice for building quality distance education

Andrew L. Lentz, MPA, Sukon Kanchanaraksa, PhD, and Sandra Wilmer, MBA. Distance Education Division, Johns Hopkins University, 111 Market Place, #850, Baltimore, MD 21202

Most nursing school faculty are very busy with teaching and research. Some teach on-campus during the spring term, during the summer institutes, and at satellite locations in the fall term. How can we prepare and support faculty to teach their course online? Since 1997 the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has been delivering public health education via the Internet. Although the Internet can reach millions worldwide, the Baltimore-based faulty is the backbone. Nursing schools or schools of public health interested in developing quality online education will be interested to learn about providing faculty incentives and advice for building quality distance education.

This session will describe the resources available to faculty at the Bloomberg School of Public Health to aid their development and delivery of Internet-based public health education. How might these lessons learned apply to public health nursing distance education? Participants will learn steps employed by the Distance Education Division to improve and maintain quality online courses. A unique funding model was created by school administrators and approved by the committee of finance. Instructional Designers, technical writers, and web developers are all part of distance education team to guide online course development. Other resources include a Faculty Multimedia Development Center to record digital audio, scan images, and digitize 35mm slides. Discussion will also include the advantages and disadvantages of using teaching assistants in the production and quality control of courses.
