Tobacco Prevention and Control (TPC) is a multifaceted and complicated arena in which to work, research, educate, advocate, and learn. Because of the complexity of issues that are represented in TPC, the field is often the subject of criticism and disapproval in terms of weak tobacco control measures, lack of community involvement, and allocation and expenditure of tobacco funds, among other important issues. While it is easy to focus on the negative aspects of such a significant topic, it is essential to explore the field’s successes, to identify and understand what has been effective in TPC, and to explore how the lessons learned from these achievements can be transferred to other areas of public health. Some examples include coalition building, presenting united fronts, advocacy, and policy change, among other successful strategies.

The Career Master of Public Health (CMPH) at The Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, a distance based program utilizing a mixed format of web based learning and face to face meetings, is currently working with the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) to develop a TPC course to be taught in the CMPH Program as well as offered to public health professionals working in TPC. As part of the course development, experts in the field of TPC are interviewed. This presentation will explore the tobacco experts’ views on the past and current accomplishments in TPC and how we can employ these successes for learning basic approaches and techniques to improve other public health issues.
