Internationally, self-employment is an important part of the labor market and a work status that is popular amongst those with a disability. However, even though self-employment is an option that has features that makes it well suited to the situation of many people with a disability, rehabilitation professionals tend not to consider it as a return-to-work option. The aim of this study was to provide initial information about the nature and extent of self-employment among Australians with a spinal cord injury (SCI) who work following their injury. The study involved following up 251 persons injured between 1990 and 1996 who were employed at the time of their injury. Of those interviewed (77%), 89 or 47% were employed at the time of interview. Of these, 57 or 64% reported being self-employed. Amongst those self-employed, the mean number of hours worked per week was 31 (SD 17.57). In comparison, for those working as employees, the mean number of hours worked per week was 27 (SD 14.83). When comparisons were made between the self-employed and those working as employees, similar lengths of time in their current position were reported (mean of 31 vs 29 months) and there were similar levels of expressed satisfaction with their current employment situation (71% vs 78%). Based on study findings, it is concluded that self-employment is a vocational rehabilitation option that those involved in disability rehabilitation might usefully become more knowledgeable about, and one for which they may beneficially offer additional service support.
