SESSION ABSTRACT: Puerto Rico faces numerous challenges pertaining to alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems, including high levels of youth alcohol consumption and high rates of alcohol-related traffic crashes and crime. In addition, a powerful rum industry is vital to the island’s economy. Numerous policy efforts have been made over the past several years to address these and other alcohol-related problems in Puerto Rico. In this session, four presentations will discuss these efforts:
1) Reducing underage drinking in Puerto Rico through a community coalition – Y. Menendez (20 minutes) 2) Public opinion on alcohol policies in Puerto Rico – K. Lenk; D. Bernat; E. Harwood; A. Wagenaar (20 minutes) 3) Implementation of local ordinances to reduce underage drinking in Puerto Rico – Y. Rodríguez (20 minutes) 4) Raising alcohol excise taxes in Puerto Rico to prevent underage drinking – J. Malave (20 minutes)
