Mary Agnes Kendra, PhD, RN, College of Nursing, University of Akron, 209 Carroll Street, Akron, OH 44325-3701, 330-972-7559, NurseKendra@aol.com and Geraldine Faria, PhD, ACSW, LISW, School of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology, The University of Akron, 188 L Polsky Building, Akron, OH 44325-3001.

Violence against helping professionals has increased in recent years. Nurses, social workers, physicians, and psychologists, are among those most likely to be victims of client violence. Violence against nurses and social workers is welll documented in the literature, however, little is related to what is taught in both of there undergraduate programs. This presentation will discuss the extent to which students are taught methods of minimizing risk in the workplace environment using data obtained from a survey of faculty teaching in baccalaureate nursing and social work programs. Three questions formed the basis of this investigation: 1) what content of safety education is included in the curricula of undergraduate nursing and social work programs; 2) what are the similarities and differences between nursing and social work regarding safety education content taught in udergraduate programs; and 3) what is the minimum content taught in baccalaureate nursing and social work programs. As other content areas that need to be included in nursing and social work changes, we as educators, have a responsibility to prepare our students for a changing workplace environment particularly that which is related to minimizing risk while care for others in community settings.
