A regional emergency medicine internet (EMSystem®) has linked ambulance-receiving emergency departments in Milwaukee County for several years, and now serves networks of emergency departments serving 15% of the US population. This always-on internet application has been used by the Milwaukee Health Department to issue real-time alerts to emergency departments, EMS providers and regional public health officials; to post public health reference materials for use when needed; to conduct surveillance for heat and bioterrorism related illness; to assess (and resolve) crowding issues during influenza season. The system was used recently for multi-hospital syndromic surveillance for conditions suggestive of man-made or natural disease outbreaks.
